How to Tell a Friend Something Bothered You

4 min readFamily & Boundaries

Telling a friend they hurt you is one of the scariest things you can do — because the friendship itself feels at stake. But unspoken resentment is what actually kills friendships. Bringing something up with care and honesty is one of the most loving things you can do for the relationship.

Why this is hard

Friendships don't come with the same 'commitment structure' as family or romantic relationships. You might fear that one hard conversation will end it. You worry about being called dramatic, sensitive, or high-maintenance. So you swallow it — and the distance grows quietly from the inside.

What Assertiveness Looks Like Here#

Assertiveness in a friendship means valuing the relationship enough to be honest when something hurts. If the friendship can't survive a respectful conversation about your feelings, that tells you something important. But most good friendships can — and they come out stronger on the other side.

What to Say#

Gentle#

Gentle

When to use: Use when the situation was relatively minor or when you're not sure the friend realized what they did. This opens the door without putting them on the spot.

Hey, this is kind of awkward to bring up, but I wanted to be honest with you because I value our friendship. When [situation], it kind of stung. I don't think you meant it that way, but I wanted to let you know how it landed.
Alternative Version
I've been sitting with something and I'd rather talk to you about it than let it grow. When [situation], it bothered me more than I expected. I'm not mad — I just wanted to be open with you.
Short Version
Something's been on my mind. When [situation], it hurt a bit. I wanted you to know.

Balanced#

Balanced

When to use: Use when the situation clearly affected you and you want to be direct without being harsh. This is good for patterns or bigger incidents.

I need to bring something up because it's been bothering me. When you [behavior], it really hurt. I know you might not have meant it that way, but I want to be upfront about how it affected me so it doesn't happen again.
Alternative Version
I want to be honest with you about something. [Situation] really didn't sit well with me. I'm not trying to make you feel bad — I just need you to know where I'm at so we can move forward.
Short Version
I need to be honest: [situation] really hurt. I care about us enough to say something.

Firm#

Firm

When to use: Use when the behavior was significant, repeated, or when softer approaches haven't been taken seriously.

I need to tell you something directly: what happened with [situation] really affected me. It's not something I can brush off. I need to know that you hear me on this, because if it happens again, it's going to change things between us.
Alternative Version
I've been thinking about [situation] and I have to be straight with you — it crossed a line for me. I'm telling you because I want to salvage this, not because I want to fight. But I need things to change.
Short Version
What happened with [situation] crossed a line. I need to know you take that seriously.

Text-Message Version#

I need to talk to you about something. [Situation] really bothered me. I'm bringing it up because I care about our friendship and I don't want it to become a thing between us.

What Not to Say#

Better Rewrite Examples#

Before

It's fine. I mean, it kind of bothered me, but whatever. I'm over it. [Is clearly not over it.]

After

I want to be honest — when [situation], it bothered me more than I let on. I'd rather tell you than let it sit between us.

Before

You know what you did. I shouldn't have to spell it out for you.

After

I need to bring something up. When you [behavior], it really hurt. I know you might not have realized, but I want to be upfront about it.

Quick Practice#

Reflect

Think of a time a friend did something that bothered you and you never brought it up. Write what you would say now using one of the scripts above. Does it feel more empowering than staying silent?
