4. Your Reason (Keep It Short)

One or two sentences maximum. You don't owe a long explanation.



5. Your Alternative or Offer (Optional)

If you want to soften the no or suggest something else:

Combine your opening + reason + alternative into one response:






Example Scripts

Situation: Coworker asks you to cover their Saturday shift.

"I appreciate you asking, but I'm not available this Saturday. You might check with the rest of the team though."

Situation: A friend invites you to an event you don't want to attend.

"Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm going to sit this one out. I hope you have a great time."

Situation: Your manager asks you to take on another project when you're already overloaded.

"I've thought about it, and I don't think I can take that on right now without something else slipping. Can we look at priorities together?"
