Asking for What You Need
Scripts for asking for help, clarity, space, and support — without apologizing for having needs.
Asking for Help
“I could really use some help with this. Would you be able to take part of it on?”
“I'm stretched thin right now. Can we figure out how to split this more evenly?”
When the workload is unbalanced
“I don't need you to fix it — I just need a hand getting through it.”
When you want practical help, not advice
“It would mean a lot if you could help me with this. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important.”
Asking for Clarity
“I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly. Can you walk me through what you're expecting?”
At work, when instructions are vague
“I'm not sure what you mean by that. Can you say more?”
“Before I move forward, I'd like to clarify the priority here. Which part matters most?”
“I want to do this well, so I'd rather ask now than guess wrong later.”
Asking for Space
“I need a little time to myself right now. It's not about you — I just need to recharge.”
In a relationship
“Can we come back to this later? I'm not in the right headspace to talk about it right now.”
“I care about this conversation, and I'll be better at it after I've had some time to think.”
“I need some quiet time tonight. I'm not upset — I just need space.”
Asking for Support
“I'm going through something hard and could use your support. You don't have to fix it — just being there helps.”
“It would help me to hear that you're on my side, even if you don't have all the answers.”
When you need emotional reassurance
“Can you just listen for a minute? I need to talk this through.”
“I've been carrying a lot lately. It would really help if you checked in on me sometimes.”
